What are you doing this summer?  Why not work to build your future, take on a challenge, push yourself and have some fun.

I keep meeting students in college who say “the economic times are down”.  “I have to settle with the secure part time, minimum wage job.  I have to go to summer school to keep learning since the job market is bad.”

Is anyone doing their research?

There are so many great opportunities out there if you just get off the couch and start looking and stop listening to what everyone is saying around the job market.  How do you think companies grow coming out of a recession?  They put their time and energy into giving students opportunities now in order to develop them so the organization has TOP “A” TALENT.  Some say this is a bad time for employment, but others look at this as the time to go fishing and really get the chance to pick the right fish for their lake.  Being mediocre is not ok right now.  You must be great and have some experience built in order to survive in this economy.  So, stop making excuses, go have fun and build your resume.

I was really inspired by Rob Jackson, a student from Loyola University, which is based in Chicago, IL.  I spoke with him around what he was doing this summer, and he had been working on his own business, which was an internship through College Pro.  Rob was explaining that he is learning key business skills while running his own small painting business with College Pro.  He was learning how to develop integrated marketing campaigns, recruit, interview and select employees for his team.  He was explaining that he does relationship-based professional sales and even manages his team of 15 to 20 while overseeing the financials of this small business.

I thought this was a great example of a student really putting his foot down and doing something about gaining hands-on experience and ensuring his resume is built while also having fun over a summer.  From the sounds of it, he made some money as well.  I did a little bit of research on College Pro and it appears that they are a national student development company with a tagline of “together, realizing potentials”.  I also found some things online stating “there is a College Pro Painters Scam.”  After hearing how much skill development you get and from what Rob shared with me in regards to the amount of support he received from the company, it is very hard to believe that there is a College Pro Painters scam.

Good for Rob for taking a risk and doing something to build his resume and ensure he gains the real world experience that most students are giving up on.  When reading about College Pro, the number one thing I read is that “I quit so I owed money to the organization and that is why it is a scam”.  Is it a coincidence when those who are quitting on dreams, goals and aspirations are the same students landing the mediocre jobs and settling?

Students…wake up and realize that this world is not going to come to you.  Follow the steps of Rob and go work hard for what you want, build your resume and have some fun.  Take a risk and beat this economy!
