Faux painting is a very popular method of creating a unique look on walls of a home. It’s most often used on the interior of homes, however some homeowners are choosing to use it for their home’s exterior as well. Before choosing to faux paint the exterior of your home, you should think about a few things.

First, consider your home’s exterior makeup and if faux painting would adhere successfully on the materials your home is constructed with. If your home is constructed of wood or vinyl siding, you should not consider faux exterior painting techniques. However, if your home is made of stucco, exterior faux painting can yield excellent results.

Second, think about your home’s design elements and whether faux painting would work well with them. Remember, you aren’t required to faux finishing the entire exterior of the home. Keep in mind certain outdoor elements look best with a faux finish. Outside pillars, iron gates, fences and lighting fixtures look great with faux marble finishes.

Lastly, think about the time and effort it will take you to faux paint the exterior of the home. You can guarantee the faux painting process will require about three times the amount of time and energy than traditional painting. If you’re doing the job yourself you’ll need to commit the extra energy and if you’re hiring painters you’ll be required to commit the extra labor cost.

While it may seem faux painting is not a great idea for the exterior of the home, the opposite can certainly be true. Faux painting can allow a home to stand out from the others around it. Since many homeowners are unaware of the exterior faux painting possibilities, you may end up with the most unique house on the block. If you do decide to faux finish the exterior of your home, be sure to get the correct paints for exterior use. Each finish must be waterproofed with a sealer after application. Be sure to plan your painting day for a time when the weather will be moderately warm and very dry. If you’re unsure about your abilities, you can always hire a professional painter to do the job!
